Running to Think

Alright, these two giants are both amazing and helpful for the average/advanced runner.
Both services provide great tools to keep track of your running sessions and long-term schedules. Both services allow multisport activities. Both keep each runner in contact with other runners. Both accommodate the awesome features of modern devices, from watches to smartphones.

However there are some major differences in terms of price and capabilities.

Strava makes no difference between a Suunto or Garmin watch, or smartphone, be it Android or iPhone, as long as the GPS is up and running. One feature worth mentioning is the capability to connect to runners met on the road (or trail). I am not sure that's a capability though... it sounds more like a huge privacy violation :) Other interesting features of Strava, more into the analytics realm, are available only in a premium account, which sometimes feels like a bummer...

Garmin improved so much in the last few months. From setting a workout, scheduling it on a calendar and pushing it to the device works like a charm. It also provides social networking, a bit more discretely than Strava. Only problem is that I feel there are just many more runners on Strava than Garmin. But as I do not consider running a social activity, it doesn't really matter. The only concrete drawback is that Garmin works only for Garmin devices.

Drinking is the most important aspect of nutrition. We all know that. I usually do not drink anything that differs from water or tea and coffee. But during the day, especially when I need proper hydration or, while at work, I actually love to have something to sip next to me.
I found an "insanely" natural beverage here in Belgium, almost by accident. It's called Belixir and it is produced locally by Christian and Stephen near Brussels.
These two guys follow traditional processes to make such an amazing drink.
Have a look at their website and read precious info about what it is and how it is produced.

I just tried Belixir in its two flavors, Eucalyptus and Lavender and I confirm that it is such a refreshing drink, due to some extremely healthy ingredients such as lemon and ginger. This last one actually gives that nice spicy flavor that is at times fresh and hot.

However, the most important characteristic of Belixir is the fact that there are no sugars added. Not even those that are supposed to be "sugars without sugar" like stevia or aspartame. Guess what makes Belixir also sweet? Honey, of course!

At the moment Belixir is produced and distributed locally in Belgium. In the near future they are planning to expand their market across all Belgium and hopefully Europe.
For now Belixir is selling at Belgomarkt (Rue de Dublin 19, 1050 Ixelles). And from mid June it will be selling at Shop&Go Delhaize (Avenue Louise 306, 1050 Ixelles) and I can finally find my stack at the price of 2.45 euro per bottle.
When you get yours, just remember to put it in the fridge. As I said, there are no chemicals added. Hence, it expires in about 6 months. Don't worry, that's enough to get a new stack in the fridge.

Belixir, well being is a journey, indeed!

Hello runners&friends!
When I run the long distance, I drink, fresh and clean water carried by myself or gently provided by supporters. Such a nice feeling and relief!
Unfortunately, there are people in this world who don't have such a gift. Unbelievable uh?
There are children and adults who can only satisfy their primary needs with dirty water if any.
What can we do?
I'm fundraising for children and communities around the world who are in need of clean water. Only $50 can provide someone with clean water for life. Did you know that more than 1,000 children under age 5 die every day from diarrhea caused by unsafe water? That’s more than AIDS and malaria combined.
I joined World Vision, one of the largest providers of water in the developing world, and I need your help to reach new people with clean water.
With your help, we can provide clean water, basic sanitation, and hygiene education to prevent disease and death.

Will you join me by giving a donation to help me reach my goal?

Visit my page on World Vision. Water will be tastier for all of us.
Thank you!

Hello running lovers,
it has been a while indeed. Had to catch up with some priorities in life.
I was recently running in the city of Leuven, when I heard my name from a distance. It was a lucky moment since I usually wear headphones and really live in another dimension with no people, nor noise around.

"Francesco!" that voice screamed.

He was an old friend of mine, I trained with for a while when I was into triathlon and Ironman. He is now in the belgian army and apparently he has not been actively training anymore.
He asked about me, and since I was running, there was really no doubt about my dedication.

"Nothing changed man" I said
"I eat, I run, I work. And I keep doing that in every permutation".

He asked me about the blog, this space I created almost three years ago and abandoned for a while.
That guy made me think. He told me that he was checking the site once in a while, hoping for me to post something.
I understand my writings are probably not like the ones by Shakespeare (even though that guy was boring enough not to have a website ;) but hey, I should have kept writing!

So, here I am, in my flesh and bones, on my keyboard again (brand new clicky one), writing about my passion, and ramblings while I give time to those two legs down there to recover and get ready for their next one.

Gipsy is back.
